Baeyer, Adolf von pronounced BEH yer, (1835-1917), a German chemist, won the 1905 Nobel Prize for chemistry. He received the prize for his contributions to the synthetic dye industry and for his work on organic chemical structure. He worked 20 years on his synthesis of a blue dye called indigo. He also studied the mechanism of reactions and contributed to physiological chemistry, especially in his research on uric acid.

Baeyer was born in Berlin, Germany. He was a professor at the University of Munich.
