Wallach, Otto pronounced VAHL ahk, (1847-1931), a German chemist, worked out the nature of the complex mixtures found in ethereal oils of plants. He showed that they belonged to a group called terpenes. The nature of such products as perfumes and vitamins was discovered because of his work. Wallach received the 1910 Nobel Prize for chemistry. He was born in Konigsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia).
