Wieland, Heinrich Otto, pronounced VEE lahnt,pronounced HYN rihkh (1877-1957), a German chemist, developed basic theories of the mechanism by which living cells produce energy by oxidation. His work on the structure of the bile acids and poisons produced by toads led to discoveries of the nature of hormones, vitamins, and other natural products. Wieland won the 1927 Nobel Prize for chemistry. He was born in Pforzheim.
