Spitteler, Carl pronounced SHPIHT uh luhr, (1845-1924), a Swiss poet and writer, won the 1919 Nobel Prize for literature. His main theme in the epic poem Olympic Spring (1900-1910), and in his other writings, is human suffering. He believed that suffering cannot be overcome, but that it can be reduced by the kind acts of noble people. He was born in Liestal.
